Free Range Kingston is piloting a safe, chaperoned, foot- and pedal-powered transportation system that helps kids get from school to afterschool activities — together.

We’re testing a model that reduces afterschool logistics for families, expands kids’ access to enrichment they choose, and strengthens the everyday connections that make communities healthier.

Pilot operating now — Kingston, NY (Winter/Spring 2026 Trial)

It’s 3:00 p.m., and you’re supposed to be two places at once: work and school pickup.

Every parent or caregiver knows the tension.

Afterschool hours are where kids discover passions, friendships, and confidence — but for many families, those hours have become a logistical dead zone.

Car-dependent routines, safety concerns, and rigid schedules isolate kids, exhaust caregivers, and quietly limit participation in community life.

Something shifts when kids can move through their city— without their parents but with a safe chaperone.

  • Parents regain time for work, rest, and community participation.

  • Local programs gain access to new participants.

  • Employers get more focused work done.

  • Kids build independence, friendships, and a sense of place.

Right now, we’re piloting:

  • 🚲 Multi-seat pedal vehicles with chaperones

  • 🚶‍♀️ Walking school bus routes

  • 🎨 Destinations (arts, movement, making)

  • 📍 Midtown Kingston pilot now under way
